BITPIM INSTRUCTIONS
I use BitPim to upload ringtones to my LG8500 Chocolate. You may already have something you use (which is great!) but if you don't, check out the BitPim website to see if your phone is supported. If it is, here is a step-by-step guide to uploading your new ringtone.
#1: Connect your phone to your computer via USB cable
You're phone will most likely need a specific cable for this. You can purchase one in a store or online. I got mine from eBay for relatively cheap. BitPim should automatically try to locate your phone but if it does not, go to 'Edit' and click on 'Detect phone'.
#2: Open BitPim
Once you have it opened, look under the 'Media' section for 'Ringers'. If you've used BitPim before, all of the ringtones you've used before should be located there. If you are a new user, it will be empty.
#3: Select your ringtones and drag them into the BitPim window
Once you do that, a window should pop up prompting you to change your settings. You want to change them to the following:
Sample Rate (per second) = 22050
Bitrate (kbits per second) = 64
Channels (mono/stero) = 1
When you've finished changing the settings, hit "Convert". When that's finished, click "OK". Continue the process until all the ringtones have been converted and imported.
NOTE: You may get a prompt saying that the file may be too large. This is just a standard precaution--BitPim thinks that ringtones should only be 30 seconds long. It should still play fine on your phone.
#4: Select the ringtones you want to send to your phone
Once you've done that, look up at the toolbar for the "Send data to phone" icon. It has a green arrow followed by a picture of a cellphone. If you can't find that, go to 'Data' and then click on 'Send Data to phone'. A screen should pop up with a list of options. Leave all the settings the same but check the "Ringtone" box under the "Source" column. Then click 'OK'. Towards the bottom of the BitPim window on the left, it should now have a "BUSY" icon as well as a progress bar. Wait until it says "Ready" before disconnecting your phone from your computer.
#5: Check your phone to make sure your ringtones saved
If they are there, set your preferences up however you want and have fun with your new ringtones! If they didn't show up, it's possible you made an error somewhere or your phone isn't supported by BitPim.
NOTE: With some LG phones, it's possible that while your ringtones are being transfered a text message might be sent out or sent to you. YOU WILL NOT BE CHARGED FOR THIS. My model of phone was supposed to have this problem, but it didn't, so it's possible that particular bug has been fixed already.
PLEASE NOTE: I am NOT a BitPim expert, nor am I affiliated with them in anyway. I merely use their program. If you have problems or questions regarding this guide, feel free to ask me, but I can't guarantee I'll have a response for you. You're best bet would be to check the BitPim website.
PROBLEMS WITH AVI FILES
This is a common problem with a very simple solution. If you have an AVI file that won't play in any of your usual media programs, download VLC Media Player. It's a great program that will play almost any video file so it's worth the space it takes up on your hard drive.
If for some reason that doesn't work, try to download your file again. It's possible the file is corrupted. If you are still having problems, let me know and I'll re-upload the file for you.
HJSPLIT INSTRUCTIONS
For the files that are noted as needing HJSplit to join together.
#1: Download the program
I've uploaded a .zip of the .exe file at MegaUpload that you can download here or you can get it off the web from here.
#2: Open up the application
A) If you want to join files, click 'Join'. When the 'File Join' window pops up, click on 'Input file' and select the file that has ".001" in it's name. Click 'Open' and then 'Start'.
NOTE: It's very important that you have ALL PARTS of the file that you are attempting to join and that they are all in the same folder. Otherwise, the joining process will not work.
B) If you want to split files, click 'Split'. When the 'File Split' window pops up, click on 'Input file' and select the file you want to split. Also, if you want to change the destination of where the program outputs the files, click on 'Output files' and select a folder. There's a couple different ways you can decide on the split file size. I prefer to go by MB's because it's easier to figure out how many parts it will be split in to. But if you prefer to work with KB's just put in the number you want and make sure KB's is highlighted under the 'Split file size' section. If you prefer MB's, do the same but make sure MB's is selected. Hit 'Start' and the program will start working.
#3: Make sure file works
Once the program is finished joining, make sure you check to make sure it works properly. Occasionally audio can become faster than the video itself. While annoying, I haven't found a way around this yet, so you're most likely stuck with it that way. You can always try to join the file again though.
